The Rockets announced plans Thursday to host the NBA’s new arena, known as the Rocket Ice Arena, on ice in the northwest corner of their new downtown arena.
The team said it will build a 50,000-square-foot arena that will be open for business in 2021.
The project is one of several arena construction projects underway around the league.
The Rockets also have a new home for the 2017-18 season that they say will include a retractable roof, and the team is expected to move its season opener to that arena.
“We are committed to creating a world-class arena that offers a first-class experience for all our fans,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.
“This is an exciting time for Houston and the entire Houston area.
We look forward to a great season in 2021.”
The Rockets have not announced an opening date yet.
They plan to hold their season opener on April 19 against the Lakers in a home game at NRG Stadium.
The stadium will be fully renovated and will have a capacity of 18,000.
The venue is expected cost about $5 billion.
